So… I tried for the first time this “Denim on Denim” trend, after being obsessed with all things denim during the colder months of the year, which this beautiful Pinterest board is a good proof of.
To many of us, denim is the answer to those days when nothing in your wardrobe represents you. It’s such a versatile fabric that the styling options are literally endless.
While researching the origins of this iconic piece of clothing, I discovered that the word denim comes from the French “serge de Nîmes” (a type of cotton fabric made in Nîmes), but the first denim trousers were actually made in Genoa (Italy), which in French is called Gênes, again giving name to our beloved jeans.
While the fabric’s origins may be European, jeans became very popular amongst the working class in the 19th century in the US, when a tailor called Jacob Davis was asked to design a pair of durable trousers for a lumberjack. He then designed a pair of jeans with copper rivets to reinforce the areas suffering more stress, thus creating a piece of clothing which proved to be both functional and long-lasting. When the demand was too large for him to handle, he partnered up with German immigrant Levi Strauss, who had been supplying him with bolts of denim fabric, and they patented the copper rivets which would become the signature we all recognise still today on their masterpiece, the Levis 501 jeans.
Since they were invented, jeans have been the main uniform of the working class in Western US; a symbol of rebellion and counterculture as portrayed in 1950s Hollywood movies, and nowadays: the ultimate fashion statement worn by top models and mortals alike! 😉
After this lil’ history lesson, I cannot help but wonder why I haven’t jumped earlier on the Square Denim bandwagon (I am coining that term) –not for lack of jeans and denim pieces in my wardrobe, that’s for sure!
In any case, here are some tips on how to rock this trend which some of you may find daunting 🙂
Square Denim easy recipe
1 . Total denim look: this might be the hardest one to pull off, but it’s also one of the edgiest looks you can go for! Choose pieces that have the exact same tone and play with the accessories –a headscarf, a basket bag or a colourful pair of mules. If you are going for a denim dress this springtime, you can elevate the look with a pair of wedge/espadrilles and wear skater sneakers or All-Star Converse for a more casual urban touch.
2. Look for different shades of blue: we have all fallen for the classic indigo blue of a good pair of jeans, however you can find a wide variety of “shades” and finishes out there to mix things up. Dry/raw (dark almost black) denim, light washed blue, acid wash (a gorgeous marbly bi-tonal finish)… Try on the different pieces you have in your wardrobe to see which ones go best when paired together. I opted for a chambray (denim’s little brother) shirt and dark washed jeans after trying on a lighter coloured bottom that didn’t go so well with the shirt 🙂
3. Keep it simple: denim is definitely a staple in our wardrobe and it literally goes with everything. However when attempting the square denim trend, it’s better to keep the outfit rather minimal. Add a pop of colour in your head or feet, or combine shoes + bag + belt as I did here. The tan accessories reminded me of those Western movies’ cowboys, but with an extra touch of chic & glam of course!
4. Play with the cuts and shapes: same as with the shades, nowadays we are spoilt for choice in terms of cuts. You don’t necessarily have to settle for a classic pair of jeans, but go wild with long dresses, asymmetrical skirts, boyfriend jeans, cut-offs, denim boots, denim bags… shall I continue?
5. Have fun: as always, the most important thing about style is having fun and feeling confident in your wrapping paper of the day, so obviously you may as well ignore all these tips and do your own thing. As long as you rock your style and wear a touch of denim, I will fall for it! ♥
Oh, look, a heron! Have we met somewhere?
Are you guys on board with this denim on denim trend? How would you pull it off?

8th June 2017 at 6:18 pmI’ve tried the denim on denim trend/canadian tuxedo at the very begging of the year and I fell in love with this mix! It’s so easy to do and it also looks very cool, relaxed and effortless. As you pointed out, keeping things simple when doing double denim is a must, but we can also go extra crazy for creating a stand out look :). And yeah, doing different shades of blue is a must, it would look kinda odd if all the denim pieces were in the same shade, but you nailed the trend, love! Adore the shade of your shirt and it goes so well with the camel shoes. Have a great day! xx
