Chasing Rainbows in the Grey Kingdom

Once upon a time, there was a grey kingdom. Everything in there was different hues of grey: the streets, the buildings, the plants, the skies… The inhabitants of this land led a quiet and contented life, for they believed their kingdom existed in an equilibrium, with just the right amount of light to the darkness, a shaken-up yin yang where everyone seemed to have found their balance.

One day, a girl from a faraway land who was looking for adventures appeared on the capital of the Grey Kingdom. She had heard of this odd place where everything was achromatic and was really curious to see how it was possible that its people were happy living within such a boring palette.

In order to keep a low profile during her travels, the girl dyed her hair grey, packed a small bag and set off, ready to explore the chromatic mysteries of this atypical realm.

It was relatively easy to get there. She could see how the spring tones started to fade as she approached the kingdom’s border. She worried for a second that her crimson heart would suddenly turn grey as she set foot on the colourless land, but then remembered having heard this only happened to the people born there.

The girl started wandering aimlessly down the streets, squinting her eyes in search of the tiniest colourful dot around her, but could only see grey: dark grey, light grey, almost black grey… She noticed people were looking at her out of the corner of their eyes, not used to receiving many visitors.

A boy who seemed to be running an errand started walking along her side. He asked where she came from, she told him –from a colourful land. What is that? –asked him, pointing at her face. What is what? –she queried. They passed by a reflective surface and she could see what the boy was probably referring to.

Her hair was grey alright but her lips radiated an intense red hue, her cheeks were blushed from the walking and her clothes were painted in all the colours of the rainbow! She completely forgot to pack a monochromatic attire (did she have any at all?), and was now feeling slightly out of place.

The girl then explained to the boy that the place where she came from was not that different from the Grey Kingdom. The chromatic formula used to make all things known to them simply contained other proportions. Sometimes more red, some others a bit of blue and very often a lot of green. The boy looked puzzled.

She wanted to know –How do you know Spring is here if you cannot see the colour of the plants? “The trees start to dress in a darker grey and then little pale grey buds grow from the branches” –he said, matter-of-factly. She opened her mouth in awe, it was like they were speaking different languages.

She told the boy that, in her motherland, the tree leaves and the flowers had all the colours he could see in her shirt, and that those colours could even be seen across the skies sometimes, on very special occasions. Now it was the boy who looked amazed. I want to see your shirt on the sky! –exclaimed the boy in excitement. You’ll have to come visit my kingdom when you grow up then, and look for the rainbow! –said the girl with smiling eyes.

She said goodbye to the kind boy, who was running late with his errand, and decided she had seen enough of the achromatic kingdom. The girl had always liked grey, its neatness, its neutrality, the perfect balance between red, green and blue.

However, as she discovered in her little adventure, she was simply too fond of colours to settle for just the one: she loved the turquoise blue seas, the lilacs that had started blooming back home, the pale red lips she kissed every night, the green cacti that adorned her windowsill, the bright orange juice she liked to drink in the morning…

And above all, she loved rainbows, for they reminded her of a party where all the primary colours were invited, a magical phenomenon where these hues danced in perfect synchrony!

The girl looked up to the blue sky as she left that strange land behind, and in her head started to plan a new adventure. Wherever life may take her, she would probably never stop chasing rainbows…
